Pets are considered seniors by
the time they are 7 years of age. This is particularly true for larger
breeds of dogs and for cats, which in general age faster than dogs. This
means that your pet could really be between 50 to 60 years old by the time
they are seven! Comparable to people, as an animal ages, the risk of heart,
dental, kidney disease increases as well as their risk for arthritis and
cancer. Regular wellness exams, recommended twice a year will allow the
veterinarian to diagnose, treat, and try to prevent health problems before
they become life threatening. Since nutritional requirements also change as
your pet ages, it is important to discuss with the veterinarian how to
change your senior pet’s diet and what necessary vitamins and minerals are
needed to be added. Opposite to popular belief, signs of old age aren’t
always signs of old age. In addition to the recommended adult wellness
program, senior pets require additional diagnostics.
